“Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;
let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!”
Psalm 95:2
An overview of Worship
Lutheran worship is called “Divine Service” because we emphasize the ways in which God (the Divine) serves us and gives us what we need to truly live. God invites us to gather regularly as His people to worship him and receive His gifts. When we gather, there are certain components of worship (liturgy) that will always be present. Every worship service includes a time to confess our sins to God and receive His forgiveness. We read and take to heart the Word of God, which contains both commands (law) for daily living and promises of His grace (gospel). We sing hymns and songs, both ancient and modern, to praise God and allow His truths to take root in our souls. We come to the altar of God’s presence to receive Holy Communion, in which Jesus makes himself truly present to forgive our sins and strengthen our faith. We lift our voices in prayer and thanksgiving to God, as well as encourage and uplift one another.
What to expect
You are welcome to join us at any time if you want to see what a Holy Cross worship service is like. You can also Livestream our services every Sunday or watch them On-Demand. Keep reading below for some answers to some common questions people ask before attending.
-
The worship service starts at 9:30 a.m. and typically lasts an hour. Special days or events, such as baptisms, may cause it to last a bit longer.
-
Most people who attend dress business casual, but there is no expectation. Some are dressed up, and some are more dressed down. Everyone is welcome, regardless of what their “Sunday best” might be. We’ll just be glad you’re here!
-
You can find directions to Holy Cross here. Once you park, walk up the stairs, or ramp, toward the building, and you’ll see the main doors. Come inside, and one of our greeters will welcome you and be able to answer any questions you may have.
-
We welcome children of all ages and stages to join us in worship! We understand that when things become a little "chaotic," it may make you feel anxious. But we would much rather have your entire family here than not at all. If you'd like, feel free to bring some snacks, calm toys, or books. We also have busy bags and books that you can borrow to keep little ones occupied. The children (typically ages 3–10) come forward for a special children's message at a specific point in the service.
