Today's Bible reading: Mark 3:1-6
Jesus summed up the meaning of the law in the one commandment: to love God and love your neighbor. He never put love for God above love for one’s fellow human being – that was the mistake of the self-righteous Pharisees. No – love for God finds practical expression in love for your neighbor.
Again and again we find this teaching being put to the test as Jesus and His disciples “work” on the Sabbath. In Mark chapter 2, for example, we find that Jesus’ disciples have “reaped” on the Sabbath! Jesus’ answer is that God gave the Sabbath for people’s good, not the other way around. What greater good can there be for a man who has a withered hand then to have that hand healed? Once again, the Pharisees are exposed as hypocrites: by riding their own man-made laws, they avoid the challenge to real obedience through a life of service to God and the person in need.
Prayer: Lord, lead us to take Your Word to heart. By Your Holy Spirit, work in us faith that knows You as the Way, the Truth and the Life. Amen.
