The Exorcisms

Today's Bible reading: Luke 11:14-23

Jesus cannot preach God’s gracious rule without coming into direct conflict with the false ruler of this world and His armies.  Jesus’ ministry is an attack on Satan, who has usurped God’s place.  That’s why the accounts that show Jesus casting out demons are so important – especially in Mark’s Gospel.  Now, one thing we shouldn’t do with these Exorcisms is reduce them to ancient examples of psychiatric help on the part of a great teacher.  What these exorcisms show is God’s power at work, recalling to Himself those who have fallen under the power of the pseudo-king, Satan.  Jesus can even point to His exorcisms as the real proof that the Kingdom has come.  He says: “If it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the Kingdom of God has come upon you!”

Even God's little finger is enough to dethrone the devil!  How inane of Jesus’ enemies to suggest, then, that He is acting by some evil power and casting out demons!  He is the stronger one come to destroy the kingdom of the strong one.

Prayer: Lord, Your Son has overcome even sin death and the devil for us.  Lead us to abide in Him steadfastly until the end.  Amen.

SEE YOU IN WORSHIP THIS EVENING - GOD BLESS YOUR ASH WEDNESDAY!
