Discipleship Means Mission

Today's Bible reading: Luke 10:1-24

Jesus did not teach in the safe confines of the building.  He roamed the countryside on His mission.  From the outset He involved his “followers” in this mission. Matthew 10 pictures Him sending 12 specially chosen disciples to preach the Gospel of forgiveness throughout Galilee (the number 12 is highly significant, since it represents God's claim on the total people – originally 12 tribes). Luke 10 records a mission of 72 disciples who are involved in spreading the same message: the Kingdom of God is near!

Thus, we see that these disciples are not mere learners or repeaters of traditional interpretation of the law.  They are directly involved in the action – God’s action of ushering in His rule of grace for sinners.  Further, Jesus gives them His own power and authority, to the extent that they are able to cast out demons in His name.

Prayer: Gracious Lord, thank you for being willing to suffer and die that we might be forgiven. Lead us to speak your Word a right and give us the will and strength to take up the cross and follow you to life eternal; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
