Burning One's Bridges

Today's Bible reading: Luke 9:57-62

The story of the man who expresses his willingness to follow Jesus but does not realize the cost, finishes with a summary of what discipleship means.  It shows that following Jesus means a break with one's past, identifying with Him even to the point of being homeless.  Jesus is the Son of Man.  This is a mysterious title from the Old Testament which in some places simply means a human being, but in Daniel 7:13 suggests One who is to come from heaven.  Unlike foxes and birds, the Son of Man has nowhere He can call home.  Thus the disciple is offered no comfortable existence, no physical security.  Instead He is called to proclaim, with Jesus, the coming of the Kingdom.  Compared to this great task, all others are insignificant – even the pious act of burying the relative!  So urgent is a task that there is not even any time for fond farewells.  Discipleship means resolute purpose, with no looking back.  It means full commitment to the Lord who preaches the Kingdom.

Prayer: Gracious Lord, thank you for being willing to suffer and die that we might be forgiven. Lead us to speak your Word a right and give us the will and strength to take up the cross and follow you to life eternal; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
