Today's Bible reading: Luke 3:1-22
Yet John also points us back to past promises of God. As Gabriel promised, John is filled with the Spirit, like all the great prophets of old. More particularly, he is the new Elijah sent to prepare the way of the Lord by the preaching of repentance. He even looks like Elijah with his camel hair cloak and leather belt!
His diet of locusts and wild honey marks him as a man of the desert. It was in the desert that God long ago created a people for Himself … protected them … called them again and again to repentance after they rebelled … and it was from the desert that He led them into the land of promise. Like the people at Qumran by the Dead Sea - a group of Jews we talked about a few weeks back - John the Baptist sees himself as the voice crying in the wilderness: “Prepare the way of the Lord.”
Prayer: Lord, open my eyes to the nature of your kingdom, and so move me to live a life worthy of Your Gospel by reaching out with the Good News that leads to everlasting life. Amen.
GOD BLESS YOUR DAY!
