Today's Bible reading: 2 Chronicles 36: 13-21
What is the significance of this great tragedy: the destruction of the "holy city”? 2 Chronicles 36:13-21 gives us a theological summary of the meaning of Jerusalem's fall. Israel had defiled the holy land by polluting it was idolatry. The people continued to do this despite repeated warnings of the prophets … until the cup of God’s anger was filled to overflowing. Judgment had to come!
That’s why God used a foreign power to overrun the land – even allowing His own house - the temple … with its holy vessels and treasures - to be carted away to Babylon. This had to take place to allow the land to enjoy a “Sabbath rest”, to recover from the defilement of idolatry. Both land and people had to be purified by the trials of captivity, so that they could still serve as God’s instruments for carrying out His master plan for the world.
Prayer: Remedy my faults, Great Physician, and grant me a willing heart to believe Your Word. Amen.
