Who Spoke the Truth?

Today's Bible reading: Jeremiah 28:1-17

Since the prophets were often lonely voices speaking against the majority, how could people be sure who was speaking the truth?  Deuteronomy 18:22 gives the obvious answer: only subsequent events will show whether the truth was spoken!  That is, of course, no solution for the present … and certainly no great comfort for a man like Jeremiah who has to suffer for his message.  He simply repeats the solution: it is only when peace comes that a prophecy of peace is shown to be true.  Thus, history was the proof of genuine prophecy.  As later events showed, the peace and security promised by the false prophets was nothing but lies.

Prayers: Teach us, O Lord, to avoid sin and wait upon Your Word, that we may have life in Jesus Christ.  Amen.
