Josiah's Reform

Today's Bible reading: 2 Kings 22:1-27

Josiah's reform was spectacular and thorough.  The discovery of the lost book of God's law during renovations to the temple brought home to the young king the shocking state of affairs in Judah.  The temple had become the home of many gods.  Clearing-out operations reached well beyond Jerusalem.  All pagan shrines - even the altar at Bethel erected by Jeroboam - were destroyed.

There can be no doubting Josiah’s zeal, and also his repentance.  He is praised as was no other king after David.  Yet it was all too late.  Idolatry had become a way of life for the majority.  God’s anger could not be stilled.  Nothing much remained of Josiah's reform after his death in battle against Pharaoh Neco.  The nation was headed for disaster.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, keep us through the Scriptures on the way that leads to eternal life in Jesus Christ.  Amen.
