Hope and Dispair

Today's Bible reading: Numbers 13:27 - 14:10

Over the past few weeks, we have been talking about the deliverance of God’s people from their slavery in the land of Egypt – their Exodus.  The word Exodus literally means the ‘road out’ … and this road out from Egypt to Sinai to the borders of Canaan is covered relatively quickly by the Israelite people.  All seems to be going along pretty well – Israel is at last on the doorstep of the Promised Land.  What’s more, spies come back with fantastic stories about the richness of the land.  In contrast to the hot and dreary desert, this is a land flowing with milk and honey.

Yet, it is the report of the strength of the towns and the size of the local people which makes the greatest impression, so that the Israelites are soon back to their old complaining – just when they should be singing songs of praise!  They even have the audacity to try to stone Caleb and Joshua who remind them that God has promised to give Israel this land.  Everything suddenly seems to be going wrong – certainly not according to plan!

Prayer: Father, we long to follow You.  Send Your Wor and Spirit to gently lead us.  Amen.
